Can the work of a homemaker be considered valuable in the eyes of law?

Many people still believe that a person who manages the household without earning a salary does not make an economic contribution. However, cooking, caring for children, managing the home, supporting family members, and maintaining the well-being of the household involve continuous effort and responsibility.

In Shishu Pal @ Shish Ram & Others v. Surjeet & Others (2026 INSC 634), the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India highlighted the importance of recognising the contribution of homemakers.
The Court observed that a homemaker is not merely a person performing domestic duties, but “a nation builder and an economic entity.”
